What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A Practical Guide

AI engines now answer questions directly and cite the sources they trust. Here's how GEO works and how to become one of those sources.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website's content, data and brand signals so that generative AI engines — ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews — understand your expertise, trust your information, and cite your pages in their answers.

Where traditional SEO competes for positions in a ranked list of links, GEO competes for inclusion in a synthesized answer. The engines choose a handful of sources per answer, which makes citation-worthiness the new ranking factor.

How AI engines choose their sources

AI search engines retrieve candidate pages, extract passages that directly answer the question, and prefer sources with clear structure, consistent facts, demonstrable expertise, and machine-readable data. Pages that bury the answer under long introductions rarely get quoted.

This means the strongest GEO signal is simple: answer the question clearly, near the top of the section, in language a machine can lift verbatim.

A practical GEO checklist

Structure content around real questions with semantic headings. Open each section with a direct one-to-two sentence answer, then expand. Implement JSON-LD schema (Organization, Article, FAQ, Product) so engines can verify entities. Keep facts about your business identical everywhere on the web. Publish original data and expert perspective — engines cite sources that add something new. Finally, track your visibility: run the same question panels through major AI engines monthly and record when your brand is mentioned or cited.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO and SEO share the same foundation — crawlable pages, fast performance, structured data, authoritative content. Almost every GEO improvement also strengthens classic Google rankings. Treat GEO as the answer-engine layer on top of a solid technical and content SEO base, not a replacement for it.
